About
The Open Source Sovereign Foundation Models (OSFM) workshop series is an ongoing initiative dedicated to advancing the development of competitive and sovereign open source foundation models in Europe. The series brings together researchers, engineers, policymakers, startups, and industry partners to jointly explore key technical and governance challenges shaping the future of European AI.
The second workshop will take place on 21–22 May in Hürth (near Cologne), continuing the series as a growing, collaborative format. The first international workshop took place on 17 November 2025 in Berlin as an invite-only event. Participants exchanged perspectives on data curation, scalable infrastructure, training optimization, and alignment methods, focusing on what is required to build state-of-the-art foundation models that strengthen Europe’s technological autonomy. The workshop created a collaborative space to compare approaches, share insights, and identify concrete pathways toward more transparent, trustworthy, and globally competitive AI systems in Europe.
